Why It Works: The Standard
How Shared Center Creates Shared Identity
Gathering. Belonging. Direction.
What we mean by “the standard”
In The Joy Standard, the standard is the visible center people choose to gather around.
In ancient times, a standard (or ensign) was a banner or pole raised high so people could:
orient themselves
find their people
gather safely
move forward together
It answered a simple question:
“Where do we belong?”
Jesus Christ is the Standard
Scripture consistently teaches that Jesus Christ is lifted up as the gathering point for God’s people.
“And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.”
— John 12:32
“He shall set up an ensign for the nations.”
— Isaiah 11:12
Jesus Christ is the One we look to.
He is the shared reference point that makes unity possible without uniformity.

Why a shared standard matters
Communities struggle when:
values are assumed but not shared
expectations are unclear
authority is personal instead of principled
belonging feels fragile
A shared standard removes confusion.
When Christ is clearly named as the center:
people know what the group is oriented toward
decisions have a reference point
conflict can be navigated with charity
leadership is accountable to something higher
The standard protects relationships.
The standard creates identity without exclusion
A standard does not force anyone to gather.
It simply stands.
People choose whether to approach, remain, or walk away.
This creates healthy communities where:
participation is voluntary
commitment is intentional
belonging is real
boundaries are respected
Clarity is kinder than ambiguity.
From standard to structure
Once a standard is established, structure becomes possible.
Agreements, expectations, bylaws, and rhythms are not attempts to control people. They are ways of protecting what the group has gathered around.
Without a shared standard: structure feels oppressive
With a shared standard: structure feels supportive
The difference is alignment.
The standard prepares the way for community
When people gather around Christ as their shared center:
families can knit together
communities can grow without constant tension
co-ops can thrive sustainably
joy becomes a shared experience
This is how gathering works.
